Auction Funds Distributions 1968-2004
Over a period of
38 years, the Auction and Charity Fair, netted a little over
$360,000.
The amounts taken each year are displayed in the graph below. The auction of 1984 was an
exceptional result for the period, and was greatly bolstered by a raffle run by Dave
Nichol which netted almost $5000 and was added to the net figure.
These figures, however disguise the fact that
the dollar had a far greater purchasing power in the late 1960's than in 2004, the last
year of the event. When the data is adjusted for inflation (using the Inflation Calculator
from the Statistics NZ website), a revealing pattern is displayed as shown in the next
graph. The adjusted total is $719,314.00
The graph shows that Auctions run during the
periods of high inflation of the early 1970's realised results barely matched in the
1990's and early 2000's, despite a larger club. It also displays that over the last few
years, returns were diminishing, a result which had members realising the event had
probably run its course, and new fund-raising methods were required.
